Change of Major

Students gathered in a Lecture room.

Incoming Students

As a part of the admission process, applicants are evaluated for their ability to be successful in the major they select on their application and are offered admission to the major outlined in their acceptance letter. Students not admitted into their first choice of major may be admitted to their second choice major. This process seeks to ensure that every incoming student is prepared for their intended major.

Admitted students may request to change their major after the Census Day of their first semester at the university. To prepare for a change of major, students should examine the degree requirements of their intended major by selecting the appropriate academic program in the Catalog and reviewing the Degree Requirements and Example of Degree Requirements.

Upon submitting a change of major, the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education for the school of the intended major will evaluate the student’s academic record to determine the potential for success in the new major and process the request accordingly. Please note that the student’s UT Dallas academic record may be used in order to evaluate the request.

Continuing Students

The following provides an overview of recommended steps for pursuing change of major as a continuing student at UT Dallas. The most important step is to receive guidance from academic advising. There are several important considerations that are often specific to an individual student that should be made prior to pursuing a change of major. Students who are interested in changing their major but do not meet change of major requirements for their intended major can receive pre-major advising in the Office of Undergraduate Education.

  • Review major options and the Change of Major policy, including any applicable deadlines, fee charges, and school-specific requirements and procedures.
  • Examine the degree requirements of the intended new major by selecting an academic program in the Catalog and navigating to individual program Degree Requirements and Example of Degree Requirements by Semester.
  • Meet with current academic advisor to receive guidance and insight about relevant policies, and to be referred to advising in the intended school.
  • Consider meeting with Exploratory Advising to discuss major fit.
  • Review Career Center resources related to career interests to assess major alignment with long-term goals.
  • International students should consult with an ISSO advisor.
  • Submit an online change of major using the published instructions.
